Preliminary Letter
Dear Reader,
I am a young teenager, still in high school, but at the same time, in college. All my life I have been looking forward to those years when I’ll be in high school and college. When I was in first grade, I had to walk by the high school to get to my house, and I would always look up at the BIG 11th and 12th graders and I thought boy they are so lucky!!! I’ll probably never be that old I thought I would stay a little girl forever. I couldn’t imagine my self-grown up or in high school. Now I have finally reached that age that I was always dreaming of when I was a little girl. Now in college, I had to create a portfolio for my English 101 class.
One of the first things I decided to put in there is the assignment I had to do on Self in 1958, a critical thinking piece. This was a seminar, which was due on Friday, January 27, 2006. This poem is not a very easy read. To fully understand the poem, you have to read it a few times. The assignment was to read the poem, find similar and different words, phrases and meanings, and then write a paragraph on one of those. This was one of the hardest poems to understand which is why I picked it as my critical thinking piece.
I have also written an analysis paper on The Tipping Point that I did Wednesday, February 1, 2006, which I have chosen as my revision piece. This is by far not the best paper that I’ve ever written. The assignment was to think of something that recently tipped and using the lens of the tipping point theory, and discuss whether it supports or denies The Tipping Point theory. My first major problem was that I couldn’t fully understand the assignment. Because of that, I couldn’t organize my thoughts correctly. I have good ideas and have a lot to say, but my thoughts are kind of all over the place and don’t really seem to connect well.
One of my favorite blogs I have written was called Peace. I wrote it on January 13, 2006 about one of my worst days that I had in a long time. I really like this piece because every time I read it, I re-live the stress that I went through, but when I get to the end, I feel the piece that I felt that day. I think I did well expressing my feelings, and showing the readers how I felt and make them feel the same thing. One of my favorite lines is “I laid down on the soft couch with my cozy blanket and just smelled the delicious smell of cinnamon fill the air, while soft, romantic music was playing in the background.” When I read this I imagine my self under that soft cozy blanket in that candle lit room and I just re-live it in my mind again and again.
Another piece that I have decided to put in my porfolio was a paper that I called “Precious Moment”. The assignment was to write a paper with a blend of showing and telling, of description and explicit analysis and re-create the experience for the reader. I think I did a fine job re-creating my experience for the reader. I had some quotes in there of conversations and I described my personal feelings. This gives the reader a picture of what was going on during that precious moment when my friend was getting married.
After you read my chosen pieces I really hope you will better understand why I have chosen them and understand me better as a writer. Enjoy reading my writings and not just the best of my work, but the downs of it as well. I would love to know what you think of my portfolio, so please feel free to comment. Thank you for your time!
